Noise for music
I don't know that oval is popular. I had been considerably absorbed in its music. It is in Noise music category, but to be precise, in Glitch music I think.
Oval was unit of trio at that start, released few CDs. Thereafter Oval become solo unit of Markus Popp in fact. He produced his music using skip sounds of CDs because He had disliked drums. (He restarted his career using live instruments . he has apparently ceased drums hater.) Many glitch musicians have used fake glitch sounds. He express by "glitch" literally. His
scribbling CDs cause artificial glitch of skip sounds. His characteristic is warm sounds and basso continuo noises like strings. It gave me a impression that noise is pop and catchy at that first listening. It is evergreen like Beatles in Noise world. It is evergreen like Beatles in Noise world. Rather than green, it well suit an industrial complex.
A gap from IDM
At that time, Intelligent Dance Music was fad. Then Electro music moved bedrooms from clubs by IDM. It was WARP period. Re-interpretation of Techno or House music by Aphex twin or Autechre. Antithesis for club music, like rock music approach. WARP was ahead of the times. Squarepusher or Orb sounds drum-n-bass or dub by affinities with club music. There is differences, loop or not, dance or not. The former is melodious, the latter is on danceable stance. The scene was pulled by the former, its audience was almost rock listeners. It was naturally reaction, Bjork or Radiohead had inspirations from their music.
Noisy and Minimal
Oval is obviously heterogeneity among them. Stoic repetition like Minimal dub of Basic Channel. The noise layer is looped in the minimal manner, the elaborate structure reflect changes in the repetition vividly as a kaleidoscope. He doesn't emphasize melody line like IDM. This work stubbornly keep the manner of dance music that is unnecessary as noise music. The dance noise music was born because Germany that gave birth to Kraftwerk and Einsturzende Neubauten.
I feel the SF specific nostalgia from the sweet noise, let me believe that "Androids dream of electric sheep".
